Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
- Apply evidence-based approaches to the inpatient management of Parkinson’s disease, including recognition and prevention of medication-related complications during hospitalization.
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for acute and chronic pancreatitis, including management of common inpatient complications.
- Evaluate anticoagulation strategies in patients with thrombocytopenia and balance competing risks of thrombosis and bleeding in complex hospitalized patients.
- Incorporate microtitration protocols and contemporary pharmacologic approaches into the management of substance use disorders and symptom control in hospitalized patients.
- Integrate updated evidence regarding the expanding therapeutic arsenal for chronic kidney disease, including indications, contraindications, and inpatient considerations for emerging therapies anticipated in 2026.
- Recognize causes of metabolic acidosis and apply evidence-based treatment strategies for acid–base disturbances in hospitalized adults.
- Implement current best practices for the acute management of seizures and status epilepticus in hospitalized patients.
- Differentiate type II myocardial infarction from other causes of myocardial injury and manage associated conditions including heart failure and pleural effusions.
- Modify guideline-directed medical therapy for congestive heart failure in patients with advanced frailty, multimorbidity, or nearing end of life.
- Describe the role of PATH and other multidisciplinary care programs in supporting transitions of care and management of medically complex patients.
- Apply current evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gout in hospitalized patients.
- Utilize updated inpatient respirology management strategies for common acute respiratory presentations and chronic pulmonary diseases.
- Recognize infectious and noninfectious causes of discitis and formulate appropriate diagnostic and management plans.
- Identify and manage delirium in palliative and end-of-life care settings.

All money raised from the Royal Alex Hospital Medicine Update is donated to the Edmonton Community Foundation Affordable Housing For All Fund. To date, we have donated $125,000 to support affordable housing to vulnerable populations.
The Affordable Housing For All Fund was established by the Royal Alex Hospital Medicine Update to generate an ongoing endowment. The intent and purpose of the fund is to enhance the quality of life for those living in Canada by supporting qualified donees that undertake charitable activities and/or programs to assist people who live in difficult circumstances, including but not limited to homelessness, poverty, hunger, and/or illness, giving highest priority to support inner-city supportive housing initiatives across Canada.
